Title: Most stable DE for siduction
Post by: dairfaron on 2019/11/04, 12:30:11
Hi guys!

I am new to this forum and to siduction as well. I want to breathe some new life into my old ThinkPad X61T with this distro, but can't decide which desktop environment I want. Any suggestions? Is there a DE that is especially stable?

I'm not an experienced Linux user, but I am a fast learner ;)

xfce4, because it's the only DE which has a very slow developement.

Aber xfce ist nicht out-of-date oder? Und auch nicht in absehbarer Zeit tot?

English? Deutsch?

Google Translate - [ unless of course, you do not want to learn the stuff the hard way, but the hard way.]
Reminds me of an old quote attributed to Aristotle - "The things we have to learn before doing them, we learn by doing them". ;)

"Stable" can mean two slightly different things. In the Debian sense it means unchanging, Debian Stable will not update packages apart from security or rarely bugfix reasons.
The other meaning in software is basically "not crashing or buggy". For me as a longtime KDE user, the current Plasma 5 is stable in the sense I haven't had a crash or serious bug for a very long time, but not stable in the sense that packages get upgraded quite often.

in ENglish it would be:
unless of course, you do not want to learn the stuff the hard way, but the really hard way

I knew the Google translation was incomplete, totally lost the real meaning. DeepL was the same.

DeepL sagt dazu:
"unless, of course, you don't want to learn things the hard way, but the very hard way."

DeepL must give a different translation if you are in an English speaking country from a German speaking one. Here (Australia) I get :
Quote
except of course, you don't want to learn things the hard way, you want to learn them the hard way
which is slightly different from Google but still misses the exact meaning.  It doesn't even make sense, rather contradicts itself.

Although I am not in siduction (32 bit) Sway in sid is very quiet for weeks and weeks.  It is not a DE but a WM and it is in experimental. It is a tiling WM with all the faults and positives of a tiling WM.  It is an attempt to have a near perfect correlation in Wayland of I3 in xorg.
