Title: Network connection stops boot process
Post by: vilde on 2012/05/19, 11:09:39
I have written about this on irc but I do it here also.

I have learned and experienced before that when the network device is set to hot-plug-removable device, in ceni the network connection shall be done in the background.

On my hd install of 2012.1 rc1 the boot process stops and wait for the network to connect, the network connection is not in the background. This makes my computer take about the double time to boot and it is annoying.

Anyone else have that experience?

A workaround is ctrl-d

if "ctrl+d" is supposed to stop dhcp discovery during boot I must say that this is not working here, but maybe I misunderstood (Forward delete, or if line is empty, end of input (traditional Unix)).

Something has happen. After I installed net-tools and could se no difference on boot I did a reconfiguration of the wireless network again and a d-u. Then the boot halted a very long time to try to connect, but it was eth0, the wired network device which some way got activated again. After taking away configuration of eth0 in ceni it looks like my network connection is going in the background as it should do.

AND! it's possible to add wavelan plugin to panel, it crashed before.

Yes.  I have been noticing this for several days, and today I have learned something about it.

Background -- I have an Asus EeePC 4G/701 (don't laugh!). It has sidux 2009-01, fully updated.  But the slh kernel which was made especially for this model is pinned at 2.6.32-1.

Today was time for the monthly update of the EeePC.  320 packages to be updated

When I rebooted, I saw the same DHCPDISCOVER hang that I've been seeing on my Toshiba NB205 with siduction.  On the Toshiba, I used ceni to un-configure eth0. I'm going to do the same on the EeePC.

So, what I learned is:

-- it's not a siduction issue
-- it's not a kernel issue

It must be something in Sid's recent networking developments.

dibl,

do you have net-tools installed. It might have gotten removed during the netbase update.

Yes -- I saw the earlier post about that.

Code: [Select]
root@tosh205:/home/don# apt-cache policy net-tools
net-tools:

Are you trying to mount NFS-shares?

I got a similar problem. Booting stopped for a couple of minutes at "configuring network interfaces", then resumed and everything was fine.

After asking Google I finally discovered the culprit
--> http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=673936
Last entry has the workaround.

At least for me everything is fine now.
