As a non english speaker I would have thought translation is something like transplantation.
you can click on the translated word to select a other translation, in the selection menu is aptosid also. Google translate learn by people who use it.

I don't know exactly, but I notice often that site translations becomes better as older the site is, and I notice the tab to "give a better translation" by users, so yea maybe it is a voting system.
