Title: Recommmendation for wlan interface and product
Post by: mylo on 2012/08/05, 21:36:35
Hi all,

I am looking for a wlan connection for my siduction box. I looked in the wiki about hardware, but did not come to a conclusion for what to decide.

1) In terms of interface, what is the best
- usb
- mini-pci
- pci
to go  for? Are there any advantages in terms of speed or reliability? I ask for a short distance to the router (below 10 m).

2) Which product/manufacturer is today the best one to go for, for a siduction box? I used netgear, d-link and hama before, but the experience is too far away to provide a base for a
judgement today.

Thanks for your experiences and opinions.

Hi mylo,

1) In terms of speed there should be no differences. If you have a good connection to you're router any 300Mbit stick should be as fast as any 300Mbit card.
But a difference could be caused by the place where you're antenna is set. If you have a stick you'll be limited, when it is a card you may use an extension cord.

The distance alone is not the only criterion to get a good connection. More important is how much walls are between the receivers, which materials, what thickness. High and direction of the antennas, jamming transmitters...
Reliability: I have no different experiences on sticks and cards here but I may imagin that a chip on a card will stay cooler while working -in most systems.

2) I would not go for a product or a manufacturer of the card or stick, but for the manufakturer of the chip itself. Netgear, D-link, whatever... are using different chips on the same stick or card,  so its a good idea to have a close look at the versions. But sometimes they even use different chips and the same version... :(

I'm going for atheros chips now since a few years -since ath5k and ath9k is out and working because I like it when many chips are working out of the box with linux and I dont have to get the firmware before my network comes up...
Have a look here:  http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Devices

Good expieriences I have here with TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 802.11n [Atheros AR7010+AR9287] usb-ID: 0cf3:7015
and  Atheros AR5418 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5008E 802.11(a)bgn] (PCI-Express)

In addition to the TP-Link TL-WN821N which I have, I can report that the Belkin n300 Micro now works for 802.11n with firmware-realtek ver. 0.36, and you have to download a firmware file as well.  (fw-detect will lead you to it)  But I'm not sure the Belkin is switching back to 802.11g correctly -- if your router is only b/g, you might better go for the TP-Link.

Hi,

just on a side note : most Wlan Sticks I bought recently came with a extension cable/craddle which made it easier to find the right place.

I am also looking for an USB Adapter. TP-Link was recommend for having a good reception - what I need!!!
I am surfing here in Spain on my neighbors internet wifi, which he allowd me to do... unfortunatly the reception on the balcony is really week, so I cannot connect there and have to stay in my bedroom :-(
From the free wifi of the bars around here I catch on my balcony only 15% which not seems enough to conncet.

In brief: what usb adapter runs under linux out of the box and has the best reception...
This one was recommended on a webpage:

I also have the TP-Link TL-WN821N USB wifi stick. The advantage of a stick compared to a card is the flexibility of placement in connection with a USB cable. My desktop sits underneath my desk and with the USB cable I could place the stick on a higher level for better connectivity. The stick itself always worked perfectly and out of the box.

Hi,

speaking of this Stick (http://www.amazon.de/TP-Link-TL-WN821N-Netzwerk-W-LAN-Adapter/dp/B00194XKXA/ref=pd_cp_computers_1) in Version 3 I can confirm very good reception abilities compared to other sticks I've tried. Even better than some cards where I've had placed antennas at best positions using extension cords. Difficult environment here, many jamming sources.

heise.de had it on its page years ago. Beware: german "Angel" is in english "fishing rod".

Hi guys,

thanks for your hints. My prob is not in terms of good or worse reception, but more

1) in siductuion/debian compatibility (i do not know, whether a ndiswrapper or an other driver costs performance). My point is mainly to get it run under siduction with full performance.

2) whether there is a general (dis-) advantage pci compared to ub, beside of reception.

The distance to the router is short.

ayla, I will (in case there comes no strong recommendation for a pci vs. usb) go for your stick, should the cable of the new router have a length 5 instead of 6 m.
Thanks!
