Title: printserver?
Post by: vilde on 2012/09/24, 17:05:14
I would like to bye a printserver so I will be able to print from all my computers on the network. Of cause I would not like to pay more than needed. I have looked for example on D-LINK DPR-1020. My printer is a not so new OKI B4300 laserprinter with usb connection.

Is it possible to set up and use such a printserver on siduction and with my printer?

If it shall work for the rest of the family it has to be easy to use it after it's set up. I have never used a printserver before so I have no idea how it works.

Hej,

I've used a very simple printserver by Digitus some time ago. It was not very expensive (19 €)

My model has two USB2 Ports, one Lan Port and one for power.

It can be managed per Webaccess after connecting it with Lan Router from Lan Clients, so it is independent from os.

I've connected two printers, a HP Laserjet and a HP Deskjet. From my linux clients I've configuered it with cups Webaccess http://localhost:631 as following:
socket://ip-address-of-printserver:9100 for the first USB Port
socket://ip-address-of-printserver:9101 for the second USB Port

I think, it is similar with D-LINK DPR-1020,
good luck.

Kind regards,
 Holger

Yes and older printers may be better for this than newer ones.

Thanks, I have been away for some days. I shall see if I find one to try with.

Most wireless HP printers can be setup on your network with hplip and hplip-gui very easily.  I bought a wireless HP printer from newegg.com for very little money.  How much does a print server cost?

Here's one that prints, scans and copies for 50 dollars and 2.99 shipping

only a remark: Don't use HP Printers with sid if you want to use the non-free drivers. They are broken most of the year :)

What did you mean with non-free drivers? I tink hp drivers are already in sid, i've no problems with my hp officejet pro 8500.

dires: ever heard or read about the binary-blob, that hp is used to use. (its not marked as recommend in the drivers list).

The Quality of the prints are better. Esp. if you use lasers.

Und ich hatte mit dem Rotz eine Menge Freude im lezten Jahr. Die Alternative war Druck aus Windows, wenn ich Qualität brauchte. Aber es kann sein, dass ich bei Druckern und Scannern zu neurotisch bin. :)

Never heard the term binary-blob with hp printers.Only with nvidia and ati. If i configure my printers, i have the choice between hpijs, hpcups, and something else. Is "binary-blob" related to this choice?
