Title: WARNING: if you still use ia32
Post by: devil on 2012/11/04, 12:55:11
...then todays dist-upgrade will install packages that will remove ia32 and make you install multiarch on 64-bit platforms.

The packages that casue this are:libv4l-0 libv4lconvert0

Also packages besides ia32-foo might be removed. be careful.

If for some reason you need to hold onto ia32, please stand by. we will see if we can solve this somehow.

---------------------------------------------------------

I get

Die folgenden Pakete werden ENTFERNT:
 googleearth ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk lib32v4l-0 libwine libwine-alsa libwine-bin
 libwine-cms libwine-gl libwine-gphoto2 libwine-ldap libwine-openal libwine-print
 libwine-sane wine wine-bin
Die folgenden Pakete werden aktualisiert (Upgrade):
 ifupdown libv4l-0 libv4lconvert0 siduction-scripts

As I do noot need wine or kugel-Örs, can I see what happens? Or should I wait too? Can anything else break?

After conversion of my 64-bit system to multiarch, it seems it is possible to install ia32-libs again:

root@imerabox:/home/don# uname -a
Linux imerabox 3.6-5.towo-siduction-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 31 19:10:25 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
root@imerabox:/home/don# dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
i386
root@imerabox:/home/don# apt-cache policy ia32-libs
ia32-libs:
 Installed: 1:0.3
 Candidate: 1:0.3
 Version table:
*** 1:0.3 0
       500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
       500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
       100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

That's because ia32-libs and ilk are now just transitional  metapackages that merely pull in the 32 bit libs needed

This transition to multiarch has (so far) not been nearly as rough as I had imagined -- the developers are handling it very well, IMHO.
