I can't stand it anymore that digikam needs about 40 seconds up to more than a minute to open completely on my (lame) system (ok, I am not sure about the amount of seconds, but it IS way too long).
What would be an alternative to import images from my canon powershot 85 (I do not get it working with usb since long ago, I need ppt protokoll)
Shotwell should as well do.
Hello ralul,
thanks for the hint. I will try it, as I look for an alternative too.
Regards
But it doesn't:

Is there nothing else to access a digital camera? I'd prefere usb access over ptp mode. Years ago it *was* possible to access this camer via usb. It's not anymore which ties me to this POS@&?$ยง"&/(QQ&%$-digikam.
For some years, I have been using an earlier version of this (http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/readers/imagemate-all-in-one-usb-30/) for my digital cameras. It supports your Compact Flash format, and uses USB, therefore your OS does not care about the card format, it only sees the USB interface. I copy the files with Dolphin. Best $20 USD I ever spent!
@Michaa7: "database_table_add_column"
is a typical issue of first initialization, typical bug for Debian sid. It should be possible to circumvent by restarting and stoping the app at first.
@dibl: I really wonder there has to be some code of mountable gvfs access to cameras. Hasn't Debian a code search right now ?
By the way digikam-3.4 released yesterday after digikam-3.3 of august. They might have seen there was something to fix?
I see schema update and face recognition issues:
https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?f1=cf_versionfixedin&o1=equals&query_format=advanced&bug_status=RESOLVED&bug_status=NEEDSINFO&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=CLOSED&v1=3.4.0&product=digikam&product=digikamimageplugins&product=kipiplugins&product=showfoto&list_id=749442
@dibl:
Thanks for the suggestion (cardreader). It well may be my last resort. I'd prefere to access my camera through usb, though. I really don't understand why this possibility has vanished.

How do I stopp an app which doesn't even partially come up ? And it seems to stopp by itself (Abgebrochen).

Technically it may be a good app. But I learned to hate digikam due to its heaviness, its default settings, its restricted file tree, its un-modularity and what not ...
i got digikam 3.4 updated yesterdaycat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/siduction.list

I don't know -- I agree it seems like there should be. But the card reader has been such an easy solution, I don't look further.

I have used card readers for my cameras several years. I don't have to hassle with all the different camera apps who wants things I don't want. I want my photos in a map located where I decide and named to what I want to. A very small and cheap adapter from sd-card to usb or easiest of all is the in-built card reader in some laptops.
I use an SD card reader for reading my camera's cards and never a problem and no need to mess around with any PTP nonsense. I just open the folder on the card where the camera places the pictures and then import them into digikam or shotwell. No muss no fuss!

Lucky you, that is quite fast. Mine takes upt to 5 minutes to just show a blank window and then both CPUs are at 100% and nothing else happens... Not really usable atm.
I like Digikam and it works well here. Opens in about 5 seconds and PTP (or is it MTP?) works with my Android phone. 5 year old Core2Duo system with latest KDE from kdenext.
I like Digikam and Gwenview but don't use KDE and they drag in Akonadi which is a real PIA. I have looked several times for a decent alternatives and was pleased to find Shotwell is now a lot better that it was a year ago. It also allows you to select an application for further editing, I use darktable. If you just want to connect your camera and download to a folder then the gtkam frontend for gphoto2 works fine.
I didn't have your problem with loading speed with Digikam it was just 5-10 seconds on a slow Intel i3 CPU
Digikam 3.4.0-90r3 just freezes repoducably here. My patience with this app is slowly coming to an end...

What causes the freeze? I haven't had any problems but I don't use it intensively.
Not upgraded since last week so I still have 3.1.0-4+siduction1 . Maybe I should hold it?
Devil: I agree.
As a photographer its quite a lame program.
- no possibility to see Pics on second screen
- no real FUll-Screen
- no configuration to open pics in gimp or rawtherapee with keys
- slow, especially opening!
- no possibility to enter an path
and so on.
its maybe good for families to watch 100 photos from the last holidays, nothing more!

If you have time, could you explain the steps to get the freeze?

Santa,
all I have to do is start it and it freezes.
I guess, deleting the db and/or config would fix that, digikam just causes too much trouble for my liking lately. And I am patient, I went with KDE4 from 4.1 and with amarok since 2.0.x :)

My Digikam was very slow. It appears disabling Kipi export plugins fixed the issue. I disabled all exports & restarted Digikam - I do not know which export caused the issues. See
