I really wanted to have some of the cups devellopers in front of me and shout them out as loud as I can: Is there really no way to not break each cups update?
Is there really no way I can print when I need to print five minutes before I want to leave the house?
Now I have to ask around what "Filter failed" is meaning. The (simple text only) job is pending in the queue and I don't have the slights clue what cups is complaining about.
If I was a millionaire I would sue xxxxx for intentionally driving linux users crazy by continously breaking at least each second update.
Helpppppppppppppppppppppppp
If you get that dev in front of you, I will help with the shouting!
Here is my note to myself from the last time I fixed it, couple of weeks ago:
Quote#hp "filter failed" error
Alt-F2 "kdesu hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0"
give password, accept default "download from hp server" choice, etc.
Thanks dibl.

I'm afraid I won't find him 'cause he knows we both won't be alone ;-)

"--reason 0", we even have this prove of "intentional affliction of emotional distress", so lets find a lawyer.
To the hideous facts:
kdesu didn't work. No wonder, no kde installed, I'm on fluxbox. I have installed gksu, and AFAICT from the hd control lights "gksu hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0" provoked some activity but nothing visible and no box.
So I assume what you did affected the KDE printing menue?
As googeling didn't help I'm still lost (and what NSA sponsored hp download will I enable by default, and if not I can't print? Brave new world).

Heh -- it didn't occur to me that you might not be a KDE user -- stupid me!
As I recall, it opens a gui window and you must click click through a couple of options that you leave on default, and it reinstalls whatever the filter is that failed. Maybe if you opened a root terminal and then issued "hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0" -- it might work, or not.
I don't use the KDE printer utility at all -- I stay with CUPS. But of course for the HP printer, the hplip package is pretty much mandatory to get the driver installed in the first place.
after studying the irritating output of:gksu hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0 i realized that it has to be: gksu "hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0" with quotation marks around the hp .. 0 sequence.
I really wonder why I need this plugin now and therefor it's not solved and still does not work.
I'm falling back in a windows attitude an reboot ...
Which didn't help either. I still see "filter failed" although this misterious d/l did install successfully. This whole piece of crap cups software is going to render a whole installation worthless *cause I can't reliable print what I write. WTF
Edit:
after fiddling around with the hplip toolbox and pressing restart printer (which had status "aktiv") it now works again. :(
Hello,
about kdesu didn't work:
read the following

As I was bitten again from this hp sh*t, does this mean I am allowed to print only for a short period of time an if I don't access the hp server from time to time a cannot print anymore?

It seems to break randomly -- mine has been working for some weeks now, but previously it broke after only 2 weeks.

Yes, I think that is the situation. :'(
And again ...
I noticed, that there is an option in this (POS-) hp-filter-d/l-dialog to install from a stored copy. Unfortunately the d/l doesn't tell us where it saves (if at all) the file and what's its name.
Does anyone have a clue where to look for what file? dibl?
Thanks
Take a look in /usr/share/hplip/data/firmware.
However, none of the model names on the packages on my system are a match to the model of my printer (HP Laserjet P1606dn). My guess is hplip or foomatic knows which one is needed.
