Title: after du (12.10.) plasma-desktop won´t start

after yesterday du plasma-desktop crashes on startup (segmentation fault)

Post by: ReinerS on 2013/10/13, 10:48:58: Similar here since late yesterday. I get a black screen, some startup-programs start. I even seem to be able to switch betweeen my all black desktoos.
Netbook-plasma I haven't tried yet.

Excluding the files from the udisk2 repo these are the files I have updated today - something in there causes the crash: http://pastebin.com/PRMHTBVv

The nvidia driver is from experimental.

Inserting CDs/DVDs orSticks is regognised here (still).

The bad thing is plasma-desktop still here stays completely black and crashes when restarting it via an xterm. So this is somethng just recently introduced.

netbook-plasma works here too so I could test the handling of CDS/DVDs/Sticks with that.

Title: a flaw in your plasma config files

the configuration of your user seems to be faulty.

plasma looks for these files in ~/.kde/share/config/ :
plasma-desktop-appletsrc
plasma-desktoprc
plasmarc

I suggest to move the first out of this directory:

$ mv ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc ~/plasma-desktop-appletsrc.defect

The configfile will be generated at next start.

Post by: spacepenguin on 2013/10/14, 12:58:46: I have renamed plasma-desktop-appletsrc and plasma-desktop doesn't crash anymore. I re-created my whole desktop layouts and it still does not crash. What I did not add are the rss/news widgets and my todo widget...

The CPU usage now is 10% higher than in my former working configuration...

Other issue now: the shelves in the panel don't work anymore. They can e.g. show the favorites, but they cannot show any application category. When I choose an application category the tooltip of the shelf stays blank and the shelf is empty... :(

Do you get a KDM login? What happens after you log in? Can you open a user terminal, and try to start plasma-desktop from there?

(Edit) Renaming .kde/share/config brings back kde, I haven't found which files have the problem but it was not any of the plasmarc files.

After copying some files over bit by bit and trying to keep track of them, I have some instability with plasma crashing periodically but recovering. I can't tell which files were the ones that introduced the instability.

You could try in a terminal

kquitapp plasma-desktop
then delete .kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc (make sure you back it up first)

then in a terminal, execute plasma-desktop

Post by: vayu on 2013/11/21, 21:21:24: Seems to be some combination in systemsettings and kwinrc. I haven't isolated it yet. But even with everything working, systemsettings crashes when going to workspace appearance.

Without changing or deleting any *rc-files. So I think there was a temporary missmatch between some files and repositories as mentioned in an other thread here.
