Title: Audio production kernel
Post by: foxanthony on 2014/01/21, 00:52:37
I'm looking for a kernel, for myself and others involved in audio production work who run Debian based systems.

It needs: preempt_rt patch, CONFIG_HZ set to 1000, and tickless timer support (CONFIG_NO_HZ)

Does the siduction kernel fit this?

You may try to contact our user Brummer. He was involved in RT-Kernels.

siduction has CONFIG_HZ=1000 and CONFIG_NO_HZ=y but not RT patch. I have seen several reports on LAU list that audio performance is quite good anyway. There are a few tweaks such as putting threadirqs in grub that can help for audio. Have you read this? -
Do I really need an RT(Real Time) kernel (http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?t=7868&f=4)

I have just installed KXStudio, which doesn't use RT kernel as default. I got no xruns during a Mixbus mixdown session of 14 tracks with a dozen plugins. No overdubs or MIDI though, and 22ms reported latency in JACK (didn't try lower). It is good but I plan to install a basic siduction to set it up as a dedicated studio OS. Could be a little while but I will post progress. :)

I'm running Liquorix right now which has CONFIG_HZ=1000 but not CONFIG_NO_HZ=y or the RT patch so I'll try siduction sometime and see the difference.

I just saw that post today. I do have the rtirq script from the KxStudio repo.

Thanks for the feedback. There are so many options it's easy to get lost in it all. It is nice having choices though. I'm sure that between liquorix, siduction and the deb rt kernel I'll find something that works. My set up isn't all that demanding anyway, really; sequencer, synths and guitar.
