Titel: Pulse Audio mostly good but...
Beitrag von: devil in 2014/06/08, 10:09:13
A very annoying behaviour of Pulse Audio is that in some situations, when playing songs in Amarok or other players, the next song will start playing with 100% volume. As I have a powerful stereo connected to the workstation, you can imagine the effect.

I can trigger this by, while playing music (happens not only in amarok but also in vlc, kaffeine and deadbeef) start ksnapshot and take a screenshot. The next song will have 100% volume. Listening to music and using ksnapshot is a common combination here because I need a lot of screenshots for work and listen to music while I write. So maybe there is other combinations of apps that will also trigger this. I know of only this one so far

Anyone else ever encountered anything the like?

devil, perhaps some hints here?:
Archlinux: Clients alter master output volume (a.k.a. volume jumps to 100% after running application) (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#Clients_alter_master_output_volume_.28a.k.a._volume_jumps_to_100.25_after_running_application.29)
and
Suse: run pulseaudio server with 'flat-volumes=no' (https://features.opensuse.org/310668)

And it goes to show, PA was innocent and KDE at fault. The setting in System Settings -> Application and System Notifications -> Manage Notifications under the Player Settings was set to 100% volume. Of course I did not set it to that. Scaling it down to about 40% did the trick. Thanks der_bud for the hint :)

devil, same here on a test machine, and looked at the link from der_bud (http://forum.siduction.org/index.php?action=profile;u=128), sounds like a good solution, but, until it works good with mythtv, I can't/won't use it.

This problem still exits  #7750 (https://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/7750)          closed (https://code.mythtv.org/trac/query?status=closed)              defect (https://code.mythtv.org/trac/query?status=%21closed&type=defect)              (wontfix (https://code.mythtv.org/trac/query?status=closed&resolution=wontfix))

and is still recommended not to use it.

The most people who have problems with it on the forums (mythtv forums) are people running fedora and ubuntu which pulse comes default with those systems, as soon as pulse is purged, things run great.

Hopefully in a few years it can be good, just not ready for mythtv servers/backends/frontends yet

For people not running a media server hopefully it works out for them :)
