I hadn't updated in a few days, so, I don't know if it's related to tonight's update, but, tonight I had to do an "apt-get -f install" and then a second du to complete the dist-upgrade. It seems "kate" had a problem.

yes, same here. An "apt-get install kate" fixed it for me -- switching to the higher debian version with all of its dependencies.
