Hello dear cinnamon users,
after todays dist-upgrade one user reported his session crashes on startup.
I confirmed this in my virtualbox machine.
The bad news: there are no cinnamon packages involved in the upgrade ... so it's unknown reason.
We are investigating.

quick answer after many separate DU to find the problem :
DO NOT update :
libclutter-1.0-0_1.20.0-1_amd64.deb
gir1.2-clutter-1.0_1.20.0-1_amd64.deb
put them on hold.............
I updated them on a full DU and finished with a black desktop background and a box saying :
"no system tray detected on this system unable to start exiting "
Thank goodness for " clonezilla " backups
Sorry short of time for any more investigation for now
regards
hello pjnsmb,
thank you, that was excellent work!
Reverting to an older snapshot of my virtualbox i set thoose packages on hold:
root@sidbox:~# apt-mark hold libclutter-1.0-0 gir1.2-clutter-1.0
libclutter-1.0-0 set on hold.
gir1.2-clutter-1.0 set on hold.
and did a bigger dist-upgrade (about 550 packages) to the actual state of the repos.
Now cinnamon starts without issues!

Hi, a small workaround if allready run in a "black background and cinnamon fallback popup" is:
- open a terminal and put in:
- CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11 cinnamon --replace
- press <RETURN>
you will have to leave the terminal open but it bring back full funktion to the GUI
thanks to musca

thanks for that
It looks like the problem has already been reported on Bug #787088 for
libclutter-1.0-0
and now we have patched packages for unstable and eperimental - musca tested the unstable part, i tested the experimental part and we consider the fixed packages working
Hello,
thx for the hint pjnsmb. We have figured out the facts:
Our upstream, the debian cinnamon team, seems to be busy with preparing the upcoming cinnamon 2.6. Most likely the neccessary changes for coexistence with gnome 3.16 will only be applied in cinnamon 2.6.
For the time being with cinnamon 2.2 in unstable agaida has prepared a fix for cinnamon-session (and -common) in our fixes unstable repo.
For those of us, who love to live on the edge and have upgraded to cinnamon 2.4 in debian experimental, there is also a fix in our fixes experimental repo.
Thanks, agaida!

P.S. A fine example for community life!
Issue marked as fixed.
libclutter-1.0-0
gir1.2-clutter-1.0
updated to : 1.22.2-2 0 in debian experimental
Bug #787088 should be fixed
Hello pjnsmb,
that new libclutter will just add a break for cinnamon-session.
* debian/control.in:
+ Break cinnamon-session << 2.6.2. Closes: #787088 (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=787088).
Happily the whole issue doesn't apply to cinnamon 2.6 which has been fixed for gnome 3.16.
