in various threads of upgrade warnings some if you mentioned the issues of plasma 5 not showing some systray icons, threre is package now in debian sid which is perfectly installable in siduction meant to solve the problem:
apt-get install plasma-systray-legacy

For claws-mail it works, for pasystray and other gtk based pa-aplications not. (pa==pulse audio).
Also the kazam icon is not shown. More tests will follow.

hp-systray works again, too.
Unfortunately radiotray still not functional in systray.
Kind of visible, but cannot be controlled by any mouse or keyboard action. :(

Pidgin Skype and Kwickdisk, vlc, x-chat only show a blank Box too!
CCarpenter: apt-get purge xchat; apt-get install hexchat :D - maybe a living programm might work.

Hexchat has still no Icon too just a blank box!

For those who have only blank icons on systray: install the package sni-qt.
Apparently I was wrong about that. It seemed to have fixed issues for me, but perhaps it was something else... Sorry for the noise.
That does not help in any case.

That doesn't work for me (sni-qt was installed already). But I miss the icon of tv-browser (Java-application) only, so it is not really a problem.
