Title: Why "full-upgrade" not "upgrade"
Post by: aliclondon on 2025/06/13, 10:16:59
Hi, I'm coming over to Siduction from Debian Stable.

I'm confused why "apt full-upgrade" is recommended over "apt upgrade". Is there a risk important packages could be removed?
The debian manual suggest "upgrade" only.

Thanks.

QuoteThe debian manual suggest "upgrade" only.

The debian manual ist for stable. And for "why full-upgrade", read our manual.

I read the manual, it just said upgrade alone is not recommended.

From the debian pages:
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUnstable#What_are_some_best_practices_for_testing.2Fsid_users.3F (https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUnstable#What_are_some_best_practices_for_testing.2Fsid_users.3F)

What are some best practices for testing/sid users?
.....
Use apt upgrade instead of apt full-upgrade to avoid unwanted removal of any packages that you depend on.

That means, if the output of apt wants to remove packages, you can use upgrade to avoid that in such a situation. The other option is to wait for a day or two. But full-upgrade is generally the way to go. Man apt has additional information on the different options.

Ah I see thanks for clarifying.

How stable is siduction if I do full-upgrades every few days and am mindful of the removing packages warnings? I'm considering using it as my daily driver

If you read, what apt has to say, and act accordingly, you will be good. Many people use siduction as a productive OS. Currently, because of the freeze for Trixie, there is not much movement in the repos. In the weeks after the release of Trixie you have to keep your eyes peeled, lots of new stuff coming in, that has been waiting in experimental for the freeze to end. Every few days is an OK cadence for doing full-upgrades, just don't wait too long not to let too many packages accumulate.

I read about the flurry of packages that can come after a new stable release is released. I'm currently running Siduction and Testing in VMs - to see how I get on before making them daily drivers
