Title: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA
Post by: agaida on 2013/10/27, 01:43:02
THE FORUM IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE FORUM.

Bye bye Zikula, we will not miss you much!

Congratulations  :D

There is one thing I notice, it seems  there are a couple of re-directions in the internal links.
Also, the spell checker didn't work correct here, it mark errors, but didn't suggest corrections in the context menu. I wouldn't nitpicking here, just in case you didn't note that already.

New forum looks pretty good here -- congratulations!  A few new things to get used to -- newest post on top of thread, login moved to left side, etc.

Only one button to post a reply -- that is a nice improvement.  I don't know how many times I hit "Reply" when I needed to hit "Submit", on the old forum, and lost my post.

I don't see the redirection issue -- where is that?

That looks like a bad URL -- a typo or something.

OK here is an issue -- I was going to PM agaida, but I think I will post it here and then possibly someone else can assist him (I am willing, but don't know anything about the new software).  The automatic e-mail notification is giving the information only in German.  That's not going to work for the English-speakers.  Perhaps the automated message could be in both German and English for the quick fix.  Here is my translation of the message I received:

There will be ongoing configuration and beatification for a couple of days. Right now we are not even done moving. I willo open a subthread for bugs and wishes. There we can e.g. discuss if it makes sense to show the latest reply first or if we should stay with the old way and anything else that comes up.

That can pretty easy be changed in your profile. Just check/uncheck the box accordingly.

Anyway, congrats and thanks for the new forum.
I've found a couple of missing, not yet working, malfunctioning things but knowing that you are in the middle of a migration process I will wait a couple of days before mentioning them.

If the new thread is open, please point me to it. I have not seen it.

For me, even though I have selected English, it occasionally puts me back into German. I click English again, and it works, but a little later it will throw me back to German, again. I have not identified any particular thing that triggers this.

I just got home from work, and, I got to say, the site looks a lot better.  I do prefer seeing the newest posts below.  Reading the thread in reverse feels weird.

All in all, we've waited a long time.  It's nice to see the new site finally here.

Now to see what else is going on here.

Testing edit:  Made post on Rekonq.  After it saved, it logged me out and the site went from English to German, but, that's Rekonq, I'm having no problems using Firefox/Iceweasel.

BTW - You can change in what order the posts show up in the user profile.  I changed mine and the most recent posts are on the bottom.
Title: Re: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA
Post by: GoinEasy9 on 2013/10/27, 22:14:35
I just logged out and logged back in, in Firefox/Iceweasel, and the site came up in German.  Clicking the US flag brought it back to English, but, there should be a setting to make it depend on the user profile.

I edited my last post twice.  After that, I don't get an option to edit a third time.  Is there a setting that restricts the number of edits?

At some point it may be nice to strip the "New" flags off of the threads.  -- (Solved in next post.)

Now here's something strange.  My email notification of your reply #12 came as English.  The email notification to your reply #14 came in German.  Bug or feature?
Title: Re: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA

it can be, that it has to do with the language of the poster - melmarker is now in english - we will see, i get those mails too.

ok - when the notification about this post is in german, the notification is in the posters language - if it is so i would call this crap and report this upstream  ;D

Edit: hmm - strange, melmarker get a notification in english - this is how it should be. Are you sure, that english is the default language in your profile?

English is the default language in my profile.  The email notification from melmarker came in English.  Only your reply #14 came in German so far.  Let's see if I get another in German before filing any bugs.

I'll be at work all day tomorrow, so, I'll be playing with the site using Android if I get time.  That should be interesting.

Hi,

nice new look, good work!

Only thing I miss: I don't get the "new" notification on the Forum overview. I can work around this by using "show unread" of course or having a look at the date stamps.

Is this caused by my settings? I can't find any to set this.

My preferred language is set to german, but forum shows up in english, have to set it manually ev'ry time.

Both no big deal of course :)

greets and thanks

My preferred language is set to German, but the forum is english. Yes I can .. change it to german manually.

And while on it, hers some critics:
Using flags to symbolize languages isn't appreciated everywhere, but I can understand it makes it easy to accomplish a task. However I never ever would us the US flag for english.

Appart from the new varnish (and probabely a framework that facilitates administration) I am not entusiastic about the new layout. I hope it's not the final one.

In case someone is interested, the header is a waste of space.
The main frame, the forum itself, does not expand which compared to the old layout is a regression. It makes the whol thing looooooooong.

The lefthand menu still has some more or less redundant items, but is missing a link to the map which could give an overview to some hidden content (We had this "discussion", now we have it again). And finaly a link to the IRC would be invitating to really use it and thus help new users to easily get in direct contact. (Yes, there is this button on each desktop, but it's the only road to Rome. Why not *built* anotherone).

And there is a missfunction, too: While on the editor, I can only mark text within the first 10 lines. I cannot mark it using the mouse within the following lines.

The editors own logic to (dis-)respect or eat newlines is a POS. If there is a way to disable it, please do so, if not, that's a regression, too.
Same goes for the marking logic: It's assumptions of what it thinks I liked to mark is nearly 100% wrong.

There is a little problem with the as "neu" marked Threads: If you click on the "new"-link, you can not see in the tread which posts are new. Read and unread post are still look the same.

Is there a way to get to my own profile other than click on my own name in the "who is online"?
Title: Re: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA
Post by: agaida on 2013/10/29, 10:18:32
@Geier0815:
its up to you - just look at the posting date - and without jokes: it seems to be a good idea to mark the whole forum as read initially. if you revisit the forum, only the Boards and threads with new posts are marked. if you look into the boards on a regular base, the posts with posting dates 'today' and 'yesterda' are new.

Regarding the profile: If you look into the left menu you will find a block with "Recent Posts, Calendar, Profile, Members, Statistics, help" - there you will find the things you need.

@All: If one miss some menu entries, posts or topics - it might be a good idea to clear the browser cache and/or restart the browser of your choice. devil told me yesterday that this might solve unexpected behavior of smf eventually.

Your profile should show in the 2nd menu block on the left, between 'Calendar' and 'Members'. As to the question, how to get to tjhe latest post: there is a little => on the very right side of the topics, the 'New' is just an indicator of a new post to that topic.

Was the second block yesterday there? If so, I'm blind, shame on me.

As I see in the profile I should be able to give and recive "thanks". Will this be enabled in the future or is it enabled and I'm blind again?

Forum is still englisch although I set "German" als preferred language.
Now, for testing, I changed the setting to "English", and guess what, the forum now is German for me, without me doing anything else.
No joke!
This setting, is this stored on the forum server or is it a cookie only? IOW, each time I clear all my cookies do I have to resett my preferred language to German?

And as to my above critics concerning the layout which you do not seem do understand, it is based on the fact that the new forum is a layout desaster *with opera* which worked fine with the old one.

Confirmed -- it is the same here.  Viewing (before logging in), it is all English, since that is my system locale setting.  Upon logging in, it comes up in German, even though my profile says English.  A click on the American flag changes it to English, as expected.  Tested in Chromium and Iceweasel.  So I think the profile setting is not effective, for some reason.

Just tested.  Changed Chromium settings from "English (US)" to "English", and restarted Chromium.  No change, unfortunately.

There must something in the way the profile language setting is being handled by the software.

Wait wait -- it WAS the browser language setting.  Chromium is tricky to actually change, and I didn't actually make the change effective on the first try.

With the setting "English" moved up above the "English (US)" line, then restarting Chromium, I can log in and it comes up in English.

I'm going to restart KDM just to make sure this is really going to persist.
Title: Re: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA
Post by: dibl on 2013/10/29, 16:39:31
Yes, it is persistent, so absolut you win the "Fix of the Day" award today.

 :)

So, in the browser, the language must be set to "English", and not "English (US)".

There is a consequence to changing the setting --- Chromium has a warning that this setting will disable spell checking.  I suppose in Great Britain it will be the opposite -- spell checking will only work with "English" in the browser.  But Australians and New Zealanders will have the same issue.

The real thing is:
On your test page (http://test.siduction.org) you can put a w3c validation sticker, because *there* you have "0" Errors in the source code. This page is displayed even in Opera with a proper layout.
On the forum page (http://forum.siduction.org) you can't because there you have 14 Errors according to validation.w3c.org . Opera ever has been the number one browser to discover bad (= not standard) source code.
I can understand that it is something from difficult to quite impossible to work around all browser incompatibilities. But your joke is missing the point [14 errors], that gives it a bad taste apart from comparing Opera with this shitpiece of browser you have installed is trying to be funny to no avail.

14 errors is very little in terms of W3C validation, and we probably will be able to reduce that further.

There is also a little problem with the time when I am logged in. Actually (3013/10/31  9:46) the time of the forum shows me 2013/10/30, 22:45:16 and the time stamp of my post which I wrote 15 minutes ago is wrong too. It happens only when I am logged in. If I am logged out the time in the forum and also the time stamp of the post is correct.
I tried it with iceweasel and opera.

@all:
* language behaviour  - it was a false write to the user - should be solved now. Please clear your browser cache and test again.
* time zones: The server settings are at 0 (Europe/Berlin) - unfortunally i have no chance to reset this for all users. One should do this manually.
* opera bug - solved, eventually not perfect, but nearly :)
* be careful with your browser identifications - set the browser identification to opera lead to errors (if not opera), also netscape 3.0 is not recommended - there are really dirty hacks deep inside of smf for these browsers

I like the new forum, but I wished it has less clutter:

1. Newbie, Hero - I hate this. You can look at the amount of written articles
Why is the number of articles, which define the status not near the status.
2. Wouldn't it be clear to ever just put a long date-time iso string as a boundary before the article:
--- 2013-11-01 09:20 Today #22 ---
At the moment now it looks like a little chat preceeding every article.
3. As color blind I wished the name not red and slightly is bigger
4. What are the not formated colored cubes before a picture about?
5. Do we need "changed" every time, even before another guy answered?
Title: Re: REALLY THE LAST POST IN ZIKULA
Post by: devil on 2013/11/01, 11:41:29
To answer 4.: The cubes indicate, if white, user is offline, when green, online.
I can agree with your point 1. as well, as I would prefer the number of posts to be a bit more prominent to indicate a skill and knowledge level of the poster as reference forhis  reliability.

First of all: Thanks! I did neither expect an Opera hack nor it happen this quickly.

@all:

fine here now

I don't know where I see actual time

* opera bug - solved, eventually not perfect, but nearly :)
big step, very appreciated

I didn't know there are people which burden themselfes by stating to use Opera although they don't ;-)
Still some critics:
I still have huge problems using the editor (where you write posts). I'll investigate whether or not this is an Opera problem or really the editor.
- The way it handles new lines/paragraphs is confusing if not patronising. Above all it seems unpredictable (well, maybe it is predictable, but you don't get what you see in the editor (new lines/paragraphs). It is APITA if you try to edit with some sense for readability.
- If I try to mark some text in the editor it marks whole lines and more. The strange thing is I can mark some letters/words/lines in one paragraph but have no chance to do so in others. Again, I'll try this with FF to see it is or is not related to Opera. (EDIT_1://it seems it's related to Opera. in FF I am able to mark all the text I want.)
And generally:
Adding some thought to what devil wrote about posting numbers. This concers every forum software i ever came across:
Being Member, Administrator or Moderator is secondary or tertiary info. Display it very decent. The same goes for colored squares indicating your hero or what ever status. If I had the say I would make thos symbols smaller and not colored.
From a visual point of view the same goes for the flags, which due to their color distract from what's really is important on a forum. In addition you will find quite many webmasters and users who completly disaggree with using flags to indicate a language. It is disrespective to may users. So using the common two letter abreviations (which in fact do represent a language although thy can represent a country, too) would kill two birds with one stone ;-)
Could you please pin down the scrolling letter in the editor?
This all is meant as a feedback for your new cms (if I understand it correctly). It comes from a user who generally does not agree with colorfull layouts which provide more noise than really helpfull info.

Thanks.

PS:
Is there someone except me and the forum admin/moderator who can see my IP (displayed in the below right corner of my message)?

1. Newbie, Hero - I hate this. You can look at the amount of written articles

Heh -- "hate" is too strong for me, but I'm not crazy about it, either.  Agaida is a hero, IMO, but there aren't that many and I sure as hell am not one.  I'm happy to be a "member".   ;)

A lot of this (and what michaa7 has written) is really just human reaction to something changed.  There's a very funny little book here in the US, the title is "Who moved my cheese?" -- it is about this kind of reaction when something we are accustomed to is changed.

Agaida and the team have done some heavy lifting to get this new forum software up and running, I appreciate what you have done for the siduction user community.  I think we can get used to the differences in the appearance thingys.  I reset my language to English yesterday and it is working correctly now, and I set the time adjustment to -5 and that is correct now.  I seem to be able to do what I need to do, and in fact some things that I could never do with the Zikula forum, so color me happy and appreciative.

If all goes well here, the new look and functionality of SMF, I personally find very good.

1. Newbie, Hero - I hate this. You can look at the amount of written articles

Nothing against Agaida, he should be called developer. And I like You to be a moderator. But I hate to be a "Hero". I want to be a normal user, which I am ...

And - now knowing from devils explanation - I hate to be seen ONLINE. I - for a reason - use this forum as an offline technique communication.

Hallo,

Anyways, I like the new forum.

Fine with Forum options:

- killed my online status :
didn't make sense to show me online when I am preoccupied by other tasks

- killed seconds when showing 'Reply #NN on: ...'
but Today, Yesterday etc keeps on staying despite my format string.

- shows now 50 posts of a thread: I can well search through now

- I should make some signiture? Like
Experiencing siduction runs better than my gentoo makes me know I know nothing

@ralul:

@all:

Just another FYI.  The translator flags that are to the right of the Topic have been working great (Firefox/Iceweasel) with the new site.  I was having problems with Google translator when trying to translate, and this allows me to read the German side of the forum again.

BUT - There's always a but, isn't there.  Page (5) of this thread starts off in English and finishes in German.  I get an error in Firefox/Iceweasel saying that the page is already in English.  Using Chrome, it does the translation automatically, without using the flags.  So, just an observation, not a big problem.

I was just messing around with my profile settings and noticed that I could choose an avatar from Gallery. It offers the choice of what appears to be the avatars of every other user here. Surely this is not desirable.
Otherwise the new forum looks good. 8)

Hi,

the old forum had the ability to maximize view for using the full screen. Does the new forum offer this possibility also?

Hmmm, I had the new forums just about figured out and now (since a couple of hours ago) it seems the list on the Siduction Forum index page has been completely scrambled. I have no idea what the current "organization" is supposed to represent.

Up until now, most of the sub-forums had a separate link for English or German. Now, I tried to select one that says it is English, but when I get to the posts, they are German.

I am lost.

That looks correct Tim.  If you click one of the subforums, for example "Software Support", do you get a choice of English and German?  And then if you click English, you should see the English forum.

Yes, it does. But, the way it was through this morning was that the main index showed the English and German child forums side by side, with a separate New indicator for each. I liked it better that way, but I can get used to the new way if that's how it's going to be. Thanks.

It was a caching error - a hard reload may help. On the serverside all caches are cleared (php object cache, database cache, memcached) - a browser cache and and caching limits are a fine thing, but there are often bugs and glitches in the implementation with several browsers. For iceweasel/firefox there should be a wonderful AddOn named CacheToggle 0.6.

A <Ctrl><F5> should hard reload a page with all objects like pictures, css, js - but i'm not sure about that - its in the browser implementation.

"new message" notification in the forum list is broken. when there is a new post in a sub-board, it will not be listed in the overview. after reading / marking the sub-boards read, the sub-board will re-appear in the overview... see following screenshots as explanation
