*** I don't use debians birds at all, I get them straight from mozilla. ***

I use both firefox, thunderbird nightly (65.0a1)

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/calendar/lightning/nightly/

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/calendar-updates-issues-thunderbird

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Calendar/Calendar_Versions

Another option would be (depending what version of thunderbird your using this won't work for everyone)

Code: [Select]
apt install xul-ext-lightning

I avoided the removals and the packages flagged as no longer needed by performing the following:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark hold libpython3-stdlib python3 python3-minimal

To those who may be new to Siduction or Debian Unstable, you need to unhold the aforementioned packages after performing an upgrade:

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-mark unhold libpython3-stdlib python3 python3-minimal

@ piper
Why do you think
Code: [Select]
apt-mark hold python3 is a bad idea?

To me it is helpful not to wait too long, but install those packages, which do not cause problems. With 'apt-mark hold problem-package' I can do that.
The more packages are to be installed the harder it gets to detect the problematic ones.

python3.7-default (9%) done

In rare occasions sometimes apt-mark can be used, at this time it's not and most probably won't be, it can really screw up a full upgrade and "upgrade" is not really recommended (some cases it can be used)

erm - piper - buildd breaking things is quite normal and intended. So it's not worth a warning - if the result is crap and is installed in unstable - it is worth a warning :D We know this, you mentioned it in another thread. Maybe we should add a blog post or a wiki item about how things work in transitions and why they work that way. And maybe we should hide the existence of buildd from our users 8)

@Xaver - holding python3 is the second worst idea after holding perl or similar. Patience is in most cases the clue. Please give the buildd's the time they need. There is no other sane way to do things in a binary distribution.

melmarker, you are so damn correct :P

I have been using buildd and my builds use buildd for so long, I tend to forget about the "users"  :(

Thanks for putting me back in perspective
Title: Re: CAUTION -- python3.7 will remove hplip, libreoffice, etc. etc.
Post by: melmarker on 2018/11/23, 16:32:51
there is nothing bad or wrong with buildd - the only thing is that they build architecturewise - our builder does it a bit different iirc. afaik we build amd64 and all, after that i386, Pure all is a separated build.

The debian buildd strictly splits into all, amd64,..,x32 - and thats really clever, because it resolve some rare cycle dependency failures. I should setup our builder that way too. Downside is: if all is built and arch not yet - it will break things for an unknown time - nobody knows when/if architectures willl catch up - so not really enduser friendly.
Title: Re: CAUTION -- python3.7 will remove hplip, libreoffice, etc. etc.
Post by: piper on 2018/11/23, 17:20:25
Yes, it would be nice for our builder to due that ;) but, endusers matter :P

Back in the sidux days and later for awhile iirc we would use something like this, but, times change

Code: [Select]
#packages = """
#"""

#deps = """
#"""

#debconf = """
#"""

[ 'archs' ]
[[ 'i386' ]]
linux = 2.6-sidux-686

[[ 'amd64' ]]
linux = 2.6-sidux-amd64

That was the kitchen sink dvds I use to make (bloatware) :P

@piper   @melmarker
Sorry – I still do not understand why?
What harm can apt-mark hold python3 do? As long as I keep my python3 3.6.7-1 installation complete, it should work.
You claim that is not sure. So what can happen?
Title: Re: CAUTION -- python3.7 will remove hplip, libreoffice, etc. etc.
Post by: devil on 2018/11/23, 19:21:56
Xaver,
instead of putting packages on hold and forgetting about them later on, you can just do apt upgrade until the situation is resolved. Hold is meant for longer terms than what the situation is right now.

A good example of what might happen with forgotten holds is: https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7468.msg60785#msg60785
Title: Re: CAUTION -- python3.7 will remove hplip, libreoffice, etc. etc.
Post by: Xaver on 2018/11/23, 20:13:58

@ devil
Thanks. Ok, forgotten holds can become a problem. (apt-mark showhold would solve that.)
In this case I have put python3 on hold, did my full-upgrade and then put python3 on unhold again. So I get a full-upgrade of all the not affected packages.

Apt apgrade does less: an upgrade of the not effected packages only. So it is quite similar.

Post by: tranquil on 2018/11/24, 07:44:51
Why all this "hold" why not just wait?
Because I don't like dealing with a large amount of packages to be upgraded, especially when you resort to cherry-picking packages to be upgraded.

As to the other comments, I've held problem packages for quite some time and have not been bitten yet.  I always unhold held packages after performing a full-upgrade.  I also make a point to check here to see if some other action may be required; e.g. let packages be removed and then re-install them.    I NEVER put a package on permanent hold.

Post by: Xaver on 2018/11/24, 13:27:13
If you do not want to deal with a large amount of packages to be upgraded
it boils down to
'upgrade' (Devils approach) or 'full-upgrade' (use of hold) of the not affected packages.
I prefer 'full-upgrade', but I might be wrong.

I don't agree, you can just be "Patience", as the developers of siduction i telling. Most of the time d-u is going without problems, no need to rush things if there is no specific app(s)  that someone absolutely needs to be updated immediately.
Title: Re: CAUTION -- python3.7 will remove hplip, libreoffice, etc. etc.
Post by: piper on 2018/11/24, 13:53:58
It depends largely on what is going on, "kept back", "transitions", "broken packages"

"upgrade" is frowned upon on both testing & sid for good reason, BUT, in "certain circumstances" you will have to do (this is largely used if you haven't done a du in like 3 months"

"hold" is a very stupid thing to do (especially in sid)  and as of to date, there is no reason to do it full stop.

If you do "hold" packages and don't have the patience to wait a few hours/maybe a day/maybe 2 days  maybe sid is not for you.

It's funny going to different forums and irc and seeing "why" and then after 1000 posts the op finally says "I have this and this and this on hold"

'full-upgrade' (use of hold) should not be used in the same sentence, it's just so wrong  :P

I have made it a rule to just politely say "your on your own"

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt full-upgrade

All packages are up to date.
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

And that is with Plasma 5.14

I come from sidux -> aptosid and now siduction. I always use apt-listbugs & hold and I had zero issues.I know this forum is against listbugs & hold but for me works quite well.At the moment I have python3  python3-dev  python3-minimal iptables libpython3-stdlib:amd64.Also, I postpone the installation of nvidia-driver  till the bug filled will be cleared out

Code: [Select]
critical bugs of nvidia-driver (→ 390.87-3) <Outstanding>
 b1 - #905309 - nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x00000000); continuing
serious bugs of xserver-xorg-video-nvidia (→ 390.87-3) <Outstanding>
b2 - #903121 - xserver-xorg-video-nvidia: blank screen, CPU fan goes to max and the systems freezes
serious bugs of dkms (→ 2.6.1-1) <Outstanding>
 b3 - #884658 - dkms: Should really depends on dpkg-dev for dpkg-architecture

The only problem that this approach has is that after so many years I use linux I continue to be a beginner since I did not need many times to fix problems

Interesting   :o  and your actually saying this with a straight face using sid ;)

The unstable repositories are updated every 6 hours. This happens in debian 4 times per day, each versus 05:00, 11:00, 17:00 and 23:00

This can be/will be/most likely be/ etc ..  large amounts of packages in a sid environment, and don't get me started with transitions ;)

Sooner or later, and I don't care who you are, practicing this hold shit will bite you in the ass sooner or later, you are, after all, a human

It happens to the best of us, and because it does happen, we learn from past mistakes, well, there are exceptions, some people never/want to learn.

All that being said, it's your machine, you do it your way :P

2018-11-25  13:50:31 <jrtc27> https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/python3.7-default.html ?
2018-11-25  13:50:47 <mapreri> somehow it's not exported to the PTS, but it is perfectly tracked by the release team
2018-11-25  13:52:23 <agaida> anyways, now it is - was only a bit upset
2018-11-25  13:53:13 <mapreri> for whatever reason pochu is not triggering the rebuilds, that is indeed causing grief in multiple people…

What I meant was I don't like dealing with a large amount of packages to be upgraded when you wait during times like transitions.

This is when you wait, although you can still cherry pick (this is the result after cherry picking):

I too have been here since the sidux days (and before that with Kanotix). If i need something desperately then I install/upgrade it. A case in point is the loss of lightning after the last thunderbird upgrade. I desperately needed it so I reinstalled the new lightning as soon as it was available. I don't see anything wroong with that.

I also use listbugs (and changelogs if I'm particularly interested) because I like to see what I'm up against.

These days I tend to rely on apt -s (or aptitude) telling me something of what is going to happen. I suppose holding packages and simulating a full-upgrade might help to point out any problems and avoid a broken machine; but I've never tried it.

I see "hold" as useful when you desperately need a particular package to save an , important  task. After all siduction is about making sid usable by tempering risk with  cautious wisdom and experience.

@tranquil

Please please stop using the term cherry picking.

I really don't think you know what the word means in a linux/android/unix/windows/choose your operating system environment.

I am tired of cleaning my monitor of spit coffee every time I see you/other people use it like they know :P

cherry-picking-explained (http://think-like-a-git.net/sections/rebase-from-the-ground-up/cherry-picking-explained.html)

man git-cherry-pick

And you argue hold is a great idea

Yes, hold can be useful at times, depends what is going on and what is being held.
python3 is big, but it's your machine, do what you want, but others  spew stuff that a newer user will follow and fuck his/her machine up and we don't want that

We are here for support, not to argue about something so simple in life & linux

Here the system wants to remove yet hplip and hplip-gui

Hier auch.

We can buy some time (instead of a Brother ...), using
Code: [Select]
apt upgrade
Of course, doing that, we slowly drift away from a complete sid system as we don't get the new packages.   :'(

dibl: Wrong, there will be no drift - thats the cool thing about apt

Code: [Select]
apt upgrade == apt-get upgrade --with-new-pkgs --$some-fancy-progress-bar

Ahhhhhh!    :)

But, not the new packages which break the hplip dependencies, correct?

I let them go and reinstalled them after the upgrade, apt did not complain so I think everything is back to normal, at least for now.  ;)

@tommy2:
I cannot confirm this. After apt install hplip I get

After some investigation, it seems to me (not an expert at all!) that the problem is with libqalculate5v5.  Maybe forcing the installation of libqalculate20 would fix it?
Code: [Select]
# apt -s install libqalculate20

Anyone with more experience care to comment?

FWIW: Installing libqalculate20 (as shown above) and DU-ing worked for me.  I now have an updated system with no removals (except for outdated libraries).
Just reporting that it worked for me, but since no one more experienced has commented on it, I'd be reluctant to recommend this to anyone.

Yes, that will work, you can also do (thanks hendrikL)

Code: [Select]
apt install -s  qtchooser python3-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python-pyqt5.qtwebkit python3-pyqt5  python-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python-pyqt5  libweather-ion7 libtaskmanager6  libplasma-geolocation-interface5  libkworkspace5-5 libcolorcorrect5
But, both of us use buildd repo so ymmv and I won't really recommend this for normal users, just thought I would throw it out there :)

apt install -s  qtchooser python3-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python-pyqt5.qtwebkit python3-pyqt5  python-dbus.mainloop.pyqt5 python-pyqt5  libweather-ion7 libtaskmanager6  libplasma-geolocation-interface5  libkworkspace5-5 libcolorcorrect5

Since the last three days there is only one package that apt wants to remove "libhdf5-100" can that be gone or shall I wait longer?

I have libhd5-103 installed which conflicts / replaces libhd5-100

Thanks piper,  but after reading on the links I still don't know if it's safe to let the package go or not, I cant relate the information with my knowledge or more lack of knowledge to understand what to do or not. That's why I ask here.

What does the output of

Code: [Select]
apt install -s libhdf5-103
say, I don't use this or have it installed

Yes piper, that package will replace the one I was writing and asking about.
I should have seen that, normally I check the new ones app want to install to compare to removals and I did this time but missed it, sorry for bothering about this.
Anyway, d-u is working  now without visible problems
Thank you piper :)

When I run apt dist-upgrade I get the following  removals
Code: [Select]
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  kde-plasma-desktop kde-standard kinfocenter libclass-xsaccessor-perl libqalculate5v5 plasma-desktop
  plasma-mediacenter plasma-widgets-addons plasma-workspace
Seems kind of drastic if I want to continue using KDE.
Should I continue to wait?

Have you actually read this page?, especially page 2

Can you post the whole output of

apt -s install libqalculate20

Ok, do

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt install libqalculate20
Let it remove libqalculate5-data libqalculate5v5,

plasma-workspace will be updated.

When that is done, do

Code: [Select]

What was weird is that in two of my systems apt wanted to remove a lot of plasma packages (solved as above) while in a third it just replaced libqalculate5v5 with libqalculate20 and upgrade plasma without any removals (as it should).  I have no idea what the difference was...

It could of been just good timing of the transition at the time → auto-libqalculate (100%)

Trying to get up to date after being cut from my computers for almost 2 months. But ...
Code: [Select]
The following packages will be REMOVED:
blogilo colord digikam digikam-private-libs hplip kdegraphics kipi-plugins kolourpaint kolourpaint4 libcupscgi1 libcupsmime1 libcupsppdc1 libhdf5-100 libkf5akonadicore5abi1 libkf5alarmcalendar5 libkf5eventviews5 libkf5gravatar5abi1 libkf5ldap5 libkf5mailcommon5abi1 libkf5messagecomposer5 libkf5messagecore5 libkf5messagelist5 libkf5messageviewer5 libkf5pimcommon5abi1 libkf5pimcommonakonadi5 libkf5pimtextedit5abi1 libkf5sane5 libkf5webengineviewer5 libkpimgapiblogger5 libkpimgapicore5 libkpimkdav5abi1 libkpimsmtp5 libmbedtls10 libqalculate5-data libqalculate5v5 libsane1 sane-utils skanlite xsane
Most of the libkf5 are going to be replaced but many others won't. As suggested, I tried to install libqalculate20 but ...
Code: [Select]
apt install libqalculate20

I didn't held packages.
So, I am looking for advices: should I do an upgrade first (a procedure that I never used before) and then a full-upgrade?
Thanks

Here,  libkf5iconthemes-bin is installed as 5.51-0.1, perhaps your mirror was not up-to-date when you tried? Do apt update again, and then check apt-cache policy libkf5iconthemes-bin. Have you already tried apt-get install -f ?

@der-bud
Code: [Select]
apt policy libkf5iconthemes-bin
libkf5iconthemes-bin:
  Installed: 5.49.0-1
  Candidate: 5.51.0-1
@piperYes, but libqalculate20 would need <apt install -f> maybe.
Code: [Select]
apt policy libqalculate20
libqalculate20:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.8.0-2
Would <apt upgrade> be a proper first step?

The  libkf5wallet-bin is because of qtbase-opensource-src (auto) (https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/auto-qtbase-opensource-src.html) and more

An <apt upgrade> maybe, would do no harm as a first step.

Is this here from a normal dist-upgrade?

Trying to get up to date after being cut from my computers for almost 2 months. But ...

The following packages will be REMOVED:

Most of the libkf5 are going to be replaced but many others won't. As suggested, I tried to install libqalculate20 but ...
Code: [Select]
apt install libqalculate20

E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
I didn't held packages.
So, I am looking for advices: should I do an upgrade first (a procedure that I never used before) and then a full-upgrade?
Thanks

@piper
Yes.I strictly use sources and mirrors recommended by siduction.
I also follow these steps every time I upgrade

Code: [Select]
apt install libkf5wallet-bin

if anything go wrong, paste the full output to paste.debian.net and provide the link.

No need anymore to do runlevel 3 ;)

Code: [Select]
apt update; apt full-upgrade
Let that stuff go

We can get most if not all of it back, some names/versions have changed

No runlevel 3 anymore? Sad, I was feeling a bit of a geek doing that!
Still, isn't safer to do full-upgrade in runlevel 3?

If you are comfortable using it, by all means do it ;)  it's your box, feel at home :)

It won't hurt a thing  :P

if you want belt and braces - just use stable. Joke aside, running a D-U in a screen or tmux session does nearly the same as going to a non-graphical mode, in case the xserver crashes, just pick up the screen session from console :P

I would suggest a maintainance over anydesk - i want to know the problem with your installation, i'm selfish in such things. Ping me in #siduction or #siduction-de (agaida)

Thanks.
