My setup is a dual card ATI Radeon HD 4850.  Right now I'm using the xorg-radeon driver, but prefer the fglrx driver due to crossfire advantages.  I need a guide (step by step) on removing the xorg-radeon and installing the fglrx-legacy-driver- because smxi doesn't offer that option.

Check this site: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian

Keep in mind that you need the fglrx-legacy drivers for your card.

Your on your own if you use the smxi script which isn't supported/recommended  in siduction

I've tried with the SMXI script but none of the option work. Some wants to PM me with a step by step, or include a guide in the wiki.  The guys from Crunchbang has a nice tutorial, but it's testing not sid.

You don't need to remove the open-source driver. Just install fglrx-legacy package and it should take care of most everything. The only thing you may have to do manually is create an xorg.conf:
amdconfig --initial -f

Hi,

I have not used an ati card for a longer time now.
So anyone may correct me if I'm wrong.
Isn't it nessesary to switch kernelmodesetting off in kernel command line (radeon.modeset=0 in /etc/default/grub) when using fglrx driver?
Best results I had when my 20-fglrx.conf only assinged the driver, nothing else.
QuoteSection "Device"
Driver "fglrx"
EndSection
If there is a legacy driver available in fixes I would try this one first. If it's not working then I would try experimental.
And may be you want to install fglrx-legacy-modules-dkms out of the same repo also.
