How to install manually the right nvidia driver for my FX Quadro 3800m card?
Automatic installation which was great on desktop, failed on older laptop as the driver is not right.
That's why I can only get to the OS by typing 'nomodeset' while booting.

I tried to remove wrong driver by:
#aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx

then:
#aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Then installed 340xx driver, installation found the right one.
But then, installation nvidia-xconfig choosed again the wrong package - 375xx and now I'm not able to get to OS even by 'nomodeset'.

Any suggestions, please?

OK, SOLVED!

This time I've reinstalled OS, upgraded, updated and used the KISS approach.

$ sudo apt install nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver

- and it worked!

Another day of learning...  ;)

Hi marky,

does the driver 340.102 work correct with kernel 4.10?

marky

Hi harley-peter,

with no problems at all.

BTW
An awesome distro, everything works like a charm, for instance connection to HD TV LCD  monitor, first distro besides Mint able to do it, even simpler way.
Audio, flash, whatever debian failed, no more now!
