My HP Laserjet P1606dn was running fine until recently.  After updates I need to install the plugin, but after the last it seems that I cannot do it.
The process goes smoothly, it says the update was successful, and when I click OK I get:error: Failed to install Plug-in.
Either you have chosen to skip the Plug-in installation  or entered incorrect Password.

Here is the full run:$ hp-diagnose_plugin

So, I tried removing the printer and adding it again.  Similarly, it says successful, but then it asks (in a loop) to install the plugin:

I've tried: manually downloading the plugin, removing $HOME/.hplip, purging and reinstalling hplip, but the result is always the same...
Any suggestions?

Searching this problem alone is a pita, so many problems (arch, ubuntu, etc), I am not sure where to begin, I don't own a HP printer, 4 different threads say installed 4 billion times and then it worked.

I actually can't find a good answer, and many say

http://snapshot.debian.org/package/hplip/3.18.12+dfsg0-2/
I have a Lucky Rabbit:    "Svoot" ..... (It's Swedish)

did you try it as ~# root? or only as ~$ user?

tried both...

Although I think the problem is far from resolved, I can now print.
After failing with 'hp-setup' (as seen above), I've added the printer with CUPS.  For now, it seems to be printing fine.  I worry about what will happen next time it asks me to install/update the plugin, but I will wait to see...  I haven't tried to do anything with hplip directly for now.

I will leave this thread open for a little longer.  If after a while everything continues to work, I will mark it as solved.
Thanks to all who offered help here!

I have an HP Laserjet P1606dn -- really a great printer if you don't need the color.

Years ago I had quite a few of the "filter failed" errors, and so I wrote myself a configuration note about it.  Here is what the note says:

QuoteAlt-F2 "kdesu hp-plugin -u --required --reason 0"

give password, accept default "download from hp server" choice, etc.

or use interactive (text) mode:

~/$ dbus-launch hp-plugin -i --required --reason 0

The firmware lives at /usr/share/hplip/data/firmware"

Thanks, dibl.  I really appreciate it.
I assume you are not having any problems with it, so it must be something on my end.

I will keep it in mind if I get the problem again.  Right now I am afraid of trying anything...
Could let me know what you get from:
ls /usr/share/hplip/data/plugins/

All I see is "license.txt".  I was expecting the plugin to be there, but maybe not...

dibl

#7
don@dibl-HP350:~$ ls /usr/share/hplip/data/plugins/
license.txt
don@dibl-HP350:~$

The plugins are in /usr/share/hplip/data/firmware.

EDIT: I just tested the CLI method.  In a user terminal:

dbus-launch hp-plugin -i --required --reason 0

After I entered "d" to download from HP, I got this error

Quoteerror: Unable to recieve key from keyserver
Do you still want to install the plug-in? (y=yes, n=no*, q=quit) ?

I entered "y" and it proceeded to get the plugin, put up the license for me to accept, ask for the root password, and finished successfully.
