I've been trying the video editors Openshot, Lives, Kdenlive without success. Can't install Openshot as it has unmet dependencies. Lives installs but crashes at start up and kdenlive install but segfaults at run.

Is this behaviour occurring because I've installed them from regular Debian and not from debian-multimedia? If they need to be installed from Debian-multimedia then why are these editors in regular Debian?

"unmet dependencies"
if this ocures then enable Debian testing in your sources.list. Sometimes helps ....

@clubex , it is regarded a full-featured stable video editor is lacking for Linux!

If this is true and if you want to support development, you could:
- install all debian low level media-dev packages
- try to self compile newest git-devel video editor projects to
/usr/local

Sorry to hear about your hosptial appointment. Hope you are getting better soon.

Back to topic: Kdenlive works without an issue here (debian repo version), so maybe it is a problem with your installation. Error messages really could help.

Thanks Nex: I've been told that I'm between the moderate and severe stages of COPD. Once severe is reached average life expectancy is 4 years. I've been well aware of this for the last 5 yrs so it's no shock. Anyway back to these video editors.

The info I've gathered

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openshot : Depends: python-mlt3 but it is not going to be installed or
python-mlt2 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

The last line is incorrect. dpkg --get-selections | grep hold reveals I have not held broken packages.

All 3 packages could be bugged but IMHO this is unlikely. If Nex has kdenlive running OK then that suggests there is something wrong with my system. It's been upgraded daily from the sidux days so perhaps it's time re-install. But I'd like to avoid doing that for as long as I can.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Wish you all the best.

For you kdenlive problem: maybe this is similar to your problem:

http://www.kdenlive.org/forum/solved-kdenlive-crashes-opening-ex-cutable-kdenlive-pid-18583-signal-segmentation-fault-11

But before you rm something you do not know, do a backup ;)

And for openshot maybe a installation of the requested packages from testing could help.

Nex: Thank you for your good wishes and for the link. The files in the link did not exist on my machine so that's not it.

I've discovered openhot's failure to install is due to bug #668793 which is a failure to be aware that libmlt3 has been updated to libmlt5 (libmlt5 removes libmlt3)..

I've managed to run Pitivi and it will do for the time being. So I've given up on kdenlive and lives.

My little exploration of video editors shows how correct ralul (above) is. The state of linux video editors is a mess. IMHO there doesn't seems to be any uniformity although gstreamer does seem to offer a basis to build on.

So it's Pitivi for now and meanwhile I'll keep an eye on that Openshot.
bug. Thanks to one and all.

Openshot 1.4.2-1.1 fixes bug #668793 and is now nstallable and functional.

RE: kdenlive.

I completely removed kdenlive and all mlt/melt packages. Re-installing kdenlive drew in the correct dependencies. Kdenlive now runs without problem.

I've been there if you've been struggling with Linux video editors. I had issues with OpenShot crashing constantly when I tried it on Ubuntu, and Kdenlive also gave me random segmentation faults. I eventually gave up and started exploring other options because troubleshooting dependencies and crashes felt like a full-time job.

Now, I use more reliable solutions on different operating systems, like Movavi Video Editor, which I found straightforward to set up and use. It could be worth trying if you're open to something outside of purely Linux-based tools, especially if you want an easy way to turn any image to video with just a few steps.
