How important is x switch of during d-u?

But as you say, and I agree, if you are not so sure about something like CPU microcode or libata or something like that, the non-expert (like me) is advised to reboot.

Yes its definitely a good idea to reboot if a filesystem or a disk driver got updated for example in order for it to take effect
