After kernel upgrade 5.9.15 –> 5.10.10 ALSA-sound does not work anymore.

Booted with kernel 5.9.15 the sound is still ok.

I don't have the exact same -
Audio:     Device-1: Intel 100 Series/C230 Series Family HD Audio driver: snd_hda_intel

but my audio does come through, so there's nothing generic there.
What do you get when you run speaker-test?

jure

no problems here

It's not showing an error, then. Good.
Have you checked on alsamixer and the Advanced Audio test in System Settings? I can't imagine why they might not be right since the sound does work with a different kernel, but it's worth a look.
Oh, was there a problem with your upgrade? Your output shows the sound server for 5.9.15, is there nothing for 5.10.10? What's the inxi -A output when booting with 5.10.10?

seasons

inxi won't tell you much. Use the alsa-info script. Get one info from the 5.9 kernel and one from 5.10

@Xaver

Have you tested whether the sound is output via the headphone jack?

Currently I also have no sound over the laptop speakers, but it works via the headphone jack, USB sound card and Bluetooth.

My last d-u is from today. But I did not test if the sound through the speakers still worked before the d-u.
However, the sound over the speakers still worked at the beginning of last week.

It came today the kernel 5.10.10 but I do not think it is because of the kernel. Even with the previous kernel 5.10.9, the sound no longer works, which worked before.

I had the same problem some time ago.

My solution was:
Deletion of all files and folders related to Pulseaudio in my home directory and reboot.

good luck

This morning my speakers are working. But I did nothing more for it yesterday on the laptop.

In the evening I sent my laptop to standby as usual and did not shut it down.

So I restarted my laptop and the speakers did not work. After a short standby and wake up the speakers work again.

But why  ???

Xaver

I have now installed kernel 5.10.9 – sound does not work either.
.
inxi output looks ok:

Audio:     Device-1: Intel 7 Series/C216 Family High Definition Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
           Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.10.9-towo.2-siduction-amd64
.
For some reason kernels 5.10.xy and my hardware do not cooperate.
.
There is no 'Advanced Audio Test' on my system. Which package does contain it?

Pip

System Settings -> Audio -> Advanced -> Speaker Placement and Testing.

Xaver

@ pip
menu 'System Settings -> Audio -> Advanced -> Speaker Placement and Testing' is specific to your desktop
On my Openbox system it does not exist.

my guess: your menu leads to AudMeS

On my system AudMeS works fine with kernel 4.9.15
It does not work with kernels 5.10.9 and 5.10.10

So I shall stay with kernel 5.9.15 and hope, that kernel 5.11 will be ok again.

16 months later I have finally discovered the reason by checking the alsa installation of Refracta 11.

Since kernel 5.10 the packages 'alsa-topology-conf' and 'alsa-ucm-conf' are needed for sound output !!!

Funny this should come up today as I've had a no sound issue after a recent update. Weird thing is I discovered it in Freetuxtv. Video was fine but no sound. Sound worked from the browser and Parole though. I then discovered no sound with VLC as well. In VLC I went to Tools-Preferences-Audio and specifically selected alsa as the output module. Restarted VLC and freetuxtv and sound magically works now. For some reason VLC isn't finding alsa automatically.
I AM CANADIAN!

Bei mir das selbe. Vor einiger Zeit gab es ein update zu vlc. Seitdem geht vlc nur noch ohne Sound. Mplayer usw. gehen problemlos, nur vlc hat keinen Ton :(
