Still having boot Issues

I will run fsck and continue to scratch my head.

OK, fsck had no effect on things. It did report a "dirty bit" and removed it though. I decided to try another grub-install with options
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=GRUB
However, the situation didn't improve any. I started reading through the thread again to see if I missed anything and looking at Reiner's pic. I went in to all the directories in /boot/efi/EFI and copied all the grubx64.efi files to bootx64.efi and then ran update-grub.

IT BOOTS ALL BY ITSELF--------WOOHOO!!!

Thank you for posting this solution -- it fixed my System76 laptop too.
