Here nvidia legacy 304 would be removed, YMMV

What does this mean for nvidia legacy driver (304): It isn't built yet or it won't ever be built?

In the latter case, what are my choices: Using the nouveau driver (which always was problematic with my card) or buy an old, used AGP/PCI card (must have a look which one it is in my ageing MB)?

Nvidia has not released an update yet, but they are planning to: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/754151/linux/304-121-with-xorg-1-16/post/4243802/#4243802

You should update nvidia-settings since you have an ancient version installed.
Code: [Select]
towo:Defiant> LANG=C apt-cache policy nvidia-settings
nvidia-settings:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 340.17-0.siduction.1
  Version table:
     340.17-0.siduction.1 0
        500 http://packages.siduction.org/user/ unstable/contrib amd64 Packages

     331.67-1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ testing/contrib amd64 Packages
     304.88-1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ stable/contrib amd64 Packages

Ups, I didn't activate user contrib repository of siduction. As Towo pointed to me, now:

The new nvidia-340.24 proprietary driver also runs with xorg-1.15
I proved using my Gentoo partition.

michaa7: Das mit den abi-changes würde ich nicht überbewerten. Das ganze X-Öko-System ist in sich konsistent, da wird es keine Probleme geben - hoffe ich, war zumindest in den letzten Jahren so.
