This Logitech USB headset previously worked perfectly on my Toshiba netbook, running siduction:

[85739.178385] usb 1-1: new full-speed USB device number 6 using uhci_hcd
[85739.577677] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=0a01
[85739.577681] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[85739.577684] usb 1-1: Product: Logitech USB Headset
[85739.577686] usb 1-1: Manufacturer: Logitech

I can't say for certain which previous kernel version it was working with -- I had not used it for perhaps 6 months or more, and just tried it yesterday.  Now it will connect briefly, then becomes unconnected before I can do much with it.  Here is what I see in dmesg (after the above connection):

[85739.613706] ALSA mixer.c:1301 usb_audio: Warning! Unlikely big volume range (=464), cval->res is probably wrong.
[85739.613709] ALSA mixer.c:1305 usb_audio: [6] FU [Mic Playback Volume] ch = 1, val = -10496/-3072/16<4>[85740.165118] retire_capture_urb: 797 callbacks suppressed
[85740.620440] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, device number 6
[85760.653038] usb 1-1: new full-speed USB device number 7 using uhci_hcd
[85761.168360] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 7, error -71
[85761.219474] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1
[85788.768503] usb 1-1: new full-speed USB device number 9 using uhci_hcd
[85789.285896] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 9, error -71
[85789.336944] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1

My google-foo is not helping much -- I can find the ALSA USB device driver code and references to "buggy Logitech devices", but no real explanation of what is wrong, or whether it is fixable.

Anyone know anything about it?

Thanks!

Does it require a USB 2.0 port? Try different ports.

If your PC is pre-2003 then you'll most likely have just USB 1.1 ports

Thanks guys. This Toshiba NB205 netbook is from about 2009, and has previously worked well with the USB headphone.  It has 3 USB ports and I think one is powered, vs. the other two are not.  I just tried again in all 3 ports.  Interestingly, it is not disconnecting today.  But it is also not routing sound through the headphone.  :(

I used to skype on it occasionally, so I know it worked with the USB headset -- about this time last year it was working.  It must be something about the "unlikely big volume range" message from the driver.

I have a Win 7 VM on my desktop, with working skype, so I can use that.  But it was fun to sit outdoors with the netbook and use skype in the nice weather.
