Hi,

If someone uses gdm3 please don't do a d-u or please switch to another display manager.
Gdm3 is broken.
This might affect gnome users because gdm3 was used as display manager.

Thank you.

I was crazy because I thought the problem was nvidia drivers. I've installed 'lightdm' and I can work again.
Thanks!

I already got bit by this bug..is there any fix/workaround? And no I am not using systemd, even though some systemd packages got pulled in my last d-u

Hello dear gnome friends!
This bug includes some interesting details, but not (yet) a final solution for gdm3:

I am not that interested in Gnome. But I know Gnome-3.8 needs Systemd.

And I know Debian has garbled Systemd in two places:

/usr/lib/systemd
is the upstream place

/lib/systemd
Debian put it here. But Debian has left overs some at /usr/lib/systemd :( :(

Perhaps a workaround is to add some symlinks. (But then you have to remember to remove these before the next upgrade)

Any good tips/tricks on switching an existing install from Sysvinit to systemd in a clean way?

ralul

@DeepDayze, clean with an unclean Debian Systemd?

But calm down: It is installing in parallel safely. You just have to add init=/lib/systemd/systemd
to the grub "linux" line to boot with using it ....

OK, then will I need to make any other changes to my system? I have a Debian Sid install that has Gnome3 desktop

What I mean by "clean" is not having anything else breaking.

Yea, gdm3 is broken not to mention having bad interactions with systemd

Hello dear gnome friends,

heavy discussions on the mailing lists today: gnome 3.8 depends on systemd-logind.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/10/msg00444.html

One reaction was the proposal to switch to another default desktop.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/10/msg00496.html

I heard the rumor that a very active maintainer of gnome and systemd has left the project at least for a while. He had planned to complete the rest of the gnome 3.8 transition in one big step in the next days.

Lets wait a bit and let the dust settle down.

so then should we install systemd-logind in this case or is that package also rather broken?

install lightdm :) - and done. The best would be: apt-get install siduction-settings-lightdm(-$foo)

I'll give that a try with my Debian Sid GNOME 3 setup...thanks for that idea
