cant install kwin because libxcb-sync0 uninstallable after dist-upgrade

I didnt purge lxde as it wasnt recommended. However even after the proscribed steps kde is still not functional.

if one want a siduction kde, one should install a siduction-kde, otherwise there is a high chance to get a system that is not maintainable with a decent amount of support

in such cases i often think to myself: it isn't siduction so why should i support it?

Sure, I understand your point to an extent. At the time of the install I loved LXDE for a lightweight environment. I spent alot of time setting up NFS/webdav/Samba/Flexget/Plex and a number of other programs. Over time, I heard good things about KDE, which I liked back at 3.5 and decided I'd give it a try again. I liked it so much, I decided I'd run it instead of LXDE as I was using the machine more frequently as a desktop machine instead of just a file server. And I successfully ran that for around 2 years as KDE without any problems. I didn't even make any KDE changes recently that should be related.


In reality, I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion about what the real problem is. The KDE actually logs in and lets me interact with my desktop, HOWEVER applications are not being decorated (missing the close/Minimize/Maximize buttons) and when I went in to reenable those in the system settings they were gone . In doing my own research, people recommended resintalling KWIN which brought me to this point. The real answer could, in retrospect be alot easier than all that I've tried.


And sure, I could back up all my config and install default KDE and i'm sure that would fix my problem. It would also prevent me from learning what went wrong and also providing that to the community if it were to ever contribute directly to their experience or indirectly through any knowledge I had gained.

Today I am using "air-oxygen-color", which I got using the "Get New Decorations" button in the lower right.


If it still comes up with no window decorations after you log in, try Alt-F2 "kwin --replace" with no quote marks.

@dlalias2k1: i understand and respect your reasons - but that doesn't change my mind.Sure you can install kde over lxde and this should work. In case of lxde there should not be so much leftover - it should simply work. For arch i had a slightly different approach: make a base installation with x and copied this template into a new partition for a new system. Later on i used to use my working installation for that.

An eventually good advice would be: Get the manifest of a clean kde iso and compare the packages with your system - after that you can clean up some thing, if needed - and i herby suggest the installation of siduction-settings-kde-december to get the current siduction kde settings - this will make your kde-installation nearly behave like a siduction-kde

Yea, I think that's how I originally got on the kwin and libxcb-sync0 page.  "System-settings > Workspace Appearance > Window Decorations." is missing.

When trying to run "kwin --replace" from konsole I get a
bash: kwin: command not found

find / -name kwin
returns no results

Sure, the settings package has now been installed. The issue seems to persist. I will probably tried to find the time over the next couple of weeks to backup 3.2 terbytes and reinstall the os.

Because my desktop siduction system was converted from an aptosid system without reinstalling, I don't have any of the siduction-settings-kde-xxxx packages (I could install one if I want to).  But here's what controls the window decorations:

kde-window-manager 4:4.11.3-90r3.1 from the siduction Repo has a dependency on libxcb-sync0 (wich is not available anymore)

Maybe one has to wait a few days until a new version arrives in Debian or Siduction.
