Hello,

I have made in Runlevel 3:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade -f

After that the Gnome 3 Desktop will not start with the following message:
oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occured and the system can't recover.
All extensions have been disabled as a precaution.
                    Log out

How can I repair that?

Hello

Can you be more specific please ?
It might be a lighdm problem, a gnome problem or some gnome 3 packages missing.
First try to reinstall lightdm or to use gdm3 instead.

I have done a d-u today 29 sepetember 2014 and for me gnome3 it works.
If it won't work after reinstalling lightdm or not after enabling gdm3 almost sure your's last d-u have removed some necessary packages.

Thank you.

With kdm, lightdm the same problem. With gdm3 landing on konsole, and 'startx' bring the same message.
My last D-U was ahead of 3 weeks (11.09.2014, Gnome-shell Version was 3.12.2-3), perhaps is that the reason.

Can I now never run Gnome 3?

Post the X-Log!
Sorry, which X-Log you mean?
I have now made
sudo apt-get purge libmarblewidget18 libmutter0d libvlccore7
but the situation is the same.

The Display-Manager 'gdm3' not work --> black Screen.
I use 'kdm' now. KDE works fine.

siduction is a rolling release.
After D-U I have
~$ apt-cache policy gnome-shell
gnome-shell:
  Installiert:           3.14.0-1
  Installationskandidat: 3.14.0-1
  Versionstabelle:
*** 3.14.0-1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ unstable/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Hanisch - only a hint: convbsd is the developer who is in charge for siduction gnome. So i really think that he know what a rolling release is. And i think that his question about the installed release has a good reason. Please be so kind and provide informations if asked for.

Otherwise i could consider to close this thread because the lack of interest on your side. Thanks.

Excuse me, but I have no frigging idea wich siduction release I have installed. Perhaps begin of 2013 (32 Bit in a VirtualBox)!

Please help me, my Gnome 3 is now Version 3.14.0-1 and my last D-U was on 11.09.2014 with Gnome 3 Version 3.12.2-3.
The deletion of gnome-shell and reinstalling has no effect. 'gdm3' is no working.

Hi Hanisch,

Easy way to find out, when you are at the grub screen it will tell you the release version.  So as an example on my siduction installs it says 'siduction 2013.2.1 december (gnome) GNU/Linux'

you can also 'cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg', and that will give you the release as well.

or even better cat /etc/siduction-version i think - inxi -v1 should give you the version too.
Regarding the gdm3 problem: that one is easy:
apt-get purge gdm3 :)

if you know your version (inxi) i would recommend lightdm - this is simple too:
apt-get install siduction-settings-lightdm-gtk-$CODENAME

Hi Hanisch

Please tell us what release was used when installed.
If you don't remmeber please tell us output of ls /usr/share/wallpapers.
Siduction uses as wallpaper name release name.

cat /etc/siduction-version is another way to find release name.

Don't purge gdm3. If so it will be removed a lot of packages.
If you have done already this don't worry. We'll fix that.

Thank you !

"inxi -S" will give you the siduction version.
So will "cat /etc/siduction-version"
And, to my surprise, so will "ls /usr/share/wallpapers"

Zitatif you know your version (inxi) i would recommend lightdm - this is simple too:

First do a d-u.
Since you have as start release firestarter you need to install libpam-systemd .
Firestarter gnome display manager was gdm3.
Without libpam-systemd gdm3 won't work.
Also it's needed to install systemd-sysvinit and to remove old sysvinit.
If it's working it's ok. If not there are missing packages  because were removed at previous d-u.
Thank you.
