This may be an isolated issue with papirus, but just posting to caution others.
If anyone has a suggestion or work-around that would be appreciated.

Code: [Select]
apt install papirus-icon-theme

After this operation, 9,013 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y

--- lots of errors like this:

dpkg: error while cleaning up:
unable to restore backup version of '/usr/share/icons/Papirus/24x24/apps/gnome-settings-mouse.svg': No space left on device
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/papirus-icon-theme_20190708-2_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

meanwhile I'm monitoring disk space usage before / during / after:

df -h /

Filesystem      Size  Used   Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sdb3        25G   16G  9.2G   64% /
/dev/sdb3        25G   16G     0   100% /

/dev/sdb3        25G   16G  9.3G   64% /

`apt clean` for the rescue

Thanks for the input. I have tried all the typical apt tools I can think of short of forcing anything: apt clean, apt autoclean, apt install -f, apt --reinstall, apt remove --purge. I typically use apt clean and autoclean after every upgrade.

Code: [Select]

root@hal:/home/browe# apt remove --purge papirus-icon-theme
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  papirus-icon-theme*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
423 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 114 MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
dpkg: error processing package papirus-icon-theme (--remove):
package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal
Errors were encountered while processing:
 papirus-icon-theme
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I included the deb file install text to avoid piper's answer: 9.2G free for 9,013 kb of additional space required. I have a hard time understanding why apt would create a temporary file >9.2G to install this package.

The odd thing is during the install process space went from 9.2G free, to 0 free, then back to 9.3G free once apt gave up.

Now look carefully! It's not at all about the one small innocent package. Wanting to install the package over and over again doesn't help at all.

There are 16 GiB of 25 GiB used, so there would be 9 GiB free, but the filesystem is declared as 100% full.

So the reason lies in a problem with the filesystem. You have to find that (e.g. a part is automatically reserved (5%), maybe you have configured something wrong there).

Look at /dev/sdb3 with ncdu. Should be installed already if your install is not too old.

Thanks devil,

Problem seems to have resolved itself... likely papirus team updated the deb. I did apt install -f and for safe measure did a package --reinstall... all functioning OK now, and 8.5G free on /

Some info:

Code: [Select]
ncdu -x /
10.3 GiB /usr
3.7   GiB /var
601.3 MiB /lib
447.6 MiB /opt
29.6 MiB /root
29.4 MiB /etc
...
Total disk usage:  15.1 GiB  Apparent size:  15.0 GiB  Items: 383164

more disk and file system info:

axd: I'm not ruling out that there could be something wrong with the filesystem, but other debs that were part of the upgrade prior to papirus worked fine. Trying an upgrade earlier today gave me the following, note that there was no attempt to restore 100+ backup files today:

Code: [Select]

root@hal:/# apt install papirus-icon-theme
