Warning: KDE Plasma 5.19.5 enters Unstable
« on: 2020/11/07, 08:29:08 »
KDE Plasma 5.19.5 entered Unstable last night. Be careful with updates! Right now for me 5 packages are being removed:
libksgrd7 libksignalplotter7 libkwineffects12 libprocesscore7 libprocessui7
You can  let those go, as they are reinstalled in new versions.

Succesful DU here with 5.9.6-towo.1-siduction-amd64 and Nvidia 1080ti 455.38-1  :)

Note: libcolord2 currently held due to amd64/i386 version mismatch.

I'm getting kdevelop as a package to be removed. I'll hold off until after 5.19.5 has all gone through before worrying about it.

Kdevelop needs a rebuild, which should be uploaded soon. Then it is ok to let the old one go.

When booting my system today the start-up just stops before reaching the log-in screen. I was wondering if this problem might be related to the new KDE Plasma?

None of the regular start-up checks seem to fail, and the last line reads "[OK] Finished Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes." followed by a blinking curser. When hitting the power button the system seems to shut down regularly.
The behaviour is the same with the newest kernel (5.9.6) and any of the installed older kernels (5.9.5, 5.9.3).

Maybe the problem is that I have only been running upgrade instead of d-u for a few weeks now? I was nervous about removing packages during the ongoing transitions...
My Nvidia worked fine-ish with the new kernels for a few days now and didn't cause any problems when booting, so I don't think the problem is related to that.

Thanks for any hints on how to fix this, or on how I could at least figure out what the problem actually is!

(Also, sorry if this is the wrong place for asking this question, but I have only been running sid for a few months and couldn't figure out where to get help with this?)

Do you have the event calendar plasmoid running?
If so please update it because the old one did not work on new qt-5.15.....

https://github.com/Zren/plasma-applet-eventcalendar
If not,  rename in ~/.config the "plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc" and try to login again.
If it works you can diff it.
So I found out, the event calendar plasmoid was the reason why........

EDIT
Oh, sorry i didn't read all of your post.
Forget the words i wrote above!

It didn't reach the login manger (sddm?) after booting?
And yes it could be the reason, what does a full-upgrade/d-u will remove?
And please give us the output of inxi -v1a ( please use the [code-tags] output [/code-tag] without the "-tag".

OK, so I now d-u my system while being logged in via the command line. Everything went fine, but the GUI still won't start and the process stops at the same point as before (right before showing the GUI log-in screen).

d-u removed the following packages
Code: [Select]
cfv libksgrd7 libksignalplotter7 libkwineffects12 libprocesscore7 libprocessui7 libpython-stdlib python python-minimal

Here are the system details:
Code: [Select]
$ inxi -v1a

One thing that seems odd to me is that the running kernel seems to be 5.9.5, while according to the boot menu 5.9.6 should be installed?

Yes, if you've done an apt full-upgrade and it has completed, you should have 5.9.6 (at least). That would make me suspicious that your full-upgrade didn't go through properly.
The numbered items for removal are changed with newer numbers (I haven't checked each one). cfv was something I've had removed with no down-side that I've noticed. I can certainly log in. I had the python removed too, again with no problem for log in.
I'd suggest running another apt full-upgrade after another apt update and keep an eye on if there are any errors.

After another full-upgrade the system now correctly detects and uses the 5.9.6 kernel. However, the initial problem persists.

Anyway, the problem is clearly unrelated to the new Plasma but rather something specific to my system. So I'll try to do a little more detective work or, ultimately, re-install the whole system. Already, many lessons learned.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Probably best not to do the updates until after the Perl release is done - details on another thread.
