autoremove - kde, gtk, python?
« on: 2020/01/04, 10:55:59 »

apt-get -f install wants to autoremove these, but seems to be related to kde, gtk and python?

3 questions:

1. When was this system last fully updated?

2. What desktop environment is it?

3. What problem caused you to issue
Code: [Select]
apt -f install?
System76 Oryx Pro, Intel Core i7-11800H, SSD 970 EVO Plus;  Asus ROG STRIX X299-E, Core i7-7740X, Nvidia GTX-1060, dual monitors, SSD 860 EVO

2. KDE

3. https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7849.0 (darktable refused to start after d-u, window is closing immediately after start given the error in the other post when startet in terminal)

First, two months is too long with no d-u, when debian bullseye is under heavy development.  Better d-u at least twice per month -- every week is better.

Next, I don't know/have the GTK problem, but I would work first to resolve that.  I googled
Quote
Gtk:ERROR:../../../../gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon:
and there are some interesting posts, including one on arch, that might help.  Maybe uninstall gimp and darktable, then d-u, then reinstall if they are installable.

Worst case if nothing else works (... and I have done this, some years ago ...), let all the packages to be removed go, then d-u and get your basic system stable and with a clean set of remaining packages, i.e.:

Code: [Select]
dpkg --configure -a
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt full-upgrade
Code: [Select]
apt clean
Code: [Select]
apt autoremove
then reinstall your plasma-desktop and kde packages and anything else that you need. (This very thread can be your guide to replacing what was removed).  Be careful about forcing installations, when there are dependency problems -- maybe better to download the .deb from the stable repo, if you have to have a working package and the unstable version won't install.

I hope this helps.

The tip/solution with "apt install -f" was also given in this post: https://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=7843.msg63833

@CyrosQ First, the aoutoremove text is only a suggestion, apt-get -f install will not remove this packages. It will try to do what it says later

You problem is the probably exact same as I had yesterday and if apt-get -f install is not able to fix this you shall ask for help in irc, or here  it's not recommended to do what I did to fix it. And maybe you shouldn't do apt-get -f install at all as dibl wrote. On the other hand, I have never had problem with that command before.

apt-get -f install is not able to fix that problem.

Code: [Select]

So it seems to be a problem with ure.

Any suggestions to get rid of the problem?

After years, I did a complete new installations about half a year ago and and I thought I could keep it running some years (ok, from now with more frequent d-us...)

mdmarmer's solution worked for me:

@samoht: Hatte ich schon gesehen, aber ein Update von libreoffice war nicht möglich
@dibl: mdmarmers solution didn't work because of the apt-get -f install error.

This solved the problem (like samohts fix, but a few more libreoffice-packages were needed to be purged):
Code: [Select]
apt purge libreoffice-nlpsolver libreoffice-wiki-publisher libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-report-builder libreoffice-script-provider-bsh libreoffice-script-provider-js libreoffice-sdbc-hsqldb

Regarding the packages suggested for autoremove - will it be save to remove them or do you have any concerns?

I'd be extremely careful with autoremove.  If there is anything that seems that you need or are uncertain, I would skip it.  (But I am not an expert...  I'd just rather waste some disk space...)

I can't say that apt has ever disappointed me with the autoremove after the d_u.
It has always worked reliably.   :)

Since November? autoremove wanted to remove xfce4-screenshooter, xfce4-verve-plugin and xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin (part of the xfce4-goodies). This would limit my desktop environment. Yesterday I had it removed and then reinstalled it.

Break: foo
Replaces: foo
